I have a bad habit of picking up 3 or 4 books and attempt to read them all at once. It would be wise for me to tackle one at a time but why would I do things the simple way right? One book though that I pull off the shelf periodically and read a chapter here or there is "Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life" By Donald Whitney. It is an exceptional book focusing on why spiritual disciplines such as prayer, scripture reading, silence and solitude, etc are vitally important for the Christian as well as offering practical suggestions for incorporating them into your life. This is a quote from the chapter on prayer.
"God expects us to pray just as a general expects to hear from his soldiers in the battle...When our awareness of the greatness of God and the gospel is dim, our prayer lives will be small. The less we think of the nature and character of God, and the less we are reminded of what Jesus Christ did for us on the Cross, the less we want to pray."
